FRANKFURT — A Thai Airways long-haul flight bound for Bangkok was forced to declare an emergency and make an unscheduled return to Frankfurt Airport on Friday afternoon following a mechanical issue shortly after takeoff.

Thai Airways Flight TG921 departed Frankfurt Airport (FRA) on schedule at 14:45 local time, taking off from runway 18. However, shortly into the flight, the flight crew encountered a hydraulic failure when the aircraft’s left main landing gear failed to retract.

Responding quickly to the mechanical anomaly, the pilots leveled off and halted their climb at 13,000 feet before declaring an emergency to air traffic control.

  • Flight: TG921 (Frankfurt to Bangkok)
  • Aircraft: Boeing 777-300ER (Registration: HS-TKK)
  • Incident: Hydraulic fault leading to unretracted left main landing gear
  • Holding Pattern: Approx. 25 minutes spent dumping fuel to lower landing weight
  • Landing: Safely touched down on Runway 25C after 1 hour and 20 minutes in the air

Because the wide-body jet was fully fueled for the long-haul journey to Suvarnabhumi Airport, the crew entered a holding pattern near Frankfurt. The aircraft circled for approximately 25 minutes to jettison fuel, reducing its weight to a safe limit for landing.

After completing the fuel dump, the crew lined up for a successful approach and landed safely on runway 25C, roughly 80 minutes after departure. Ground emergency crews were on standby as a precaution, but the Boeing 777 landed without further incident and taxied under its own power to a remote stand, where passengers were safely disembarked.

No injuries were reported among the passengers or crew. Thai Airways has not yet released an official statement regarding the maintenance timeline for aircraft HS-TKK or the revised travel arrangements for affected passengers.
