MOSCOW — In what was intended to be a seamless display of Russian aerial supremacy, the televised broadcast of the annual May 9th Victory Day parade took a bizarre and embarrassing turn today when AI-generated footage inadvertently showcased Russian fighter jets sporting the flags of NATO and European Union nations.

The glitch occurred during the highly anticipated flyover by the Russian Knights and Swifts aerobatic teams. As nine Su-30 and MiG-29 aircraft roared over Red Square in their signature ‘Cuban Diamond’ formation, state media transitioned from live cameras to a high-octane, digitally rendered sequence.

The transition was meant to provide viewers with an immersive, “bird’s-eye” perspective. However, as the virtual camera dove between the sleek fuselages of the Su-30s, the prestige of the moment evaporated. Instead of the traditional Russian tricolor or the Red Star, the digital aircraft were clearly marked with the national flags of France, Germany, Poland, Canada, Norway, Finland, United Kingdom, Italia, Belgium…

The appearance of flags representing nations currently providing military aid to Ukraine, and labeled “unfriendly” by the Kremlin, caused an immediate stir on social media.

The AI sequence was abruptly cut, returning to live footage of six Su-25 attack aircraft as they closed the air parade, painting the sky with the colors of the Russian flag in their wake.
