Most of Emirates’ A380 superjumbos are currently stuck at airports across the globe

DUBAI, UAE — The “Kings of the Skies” are currently scattered across the globe with nowhere to go. Following a series of dramatic escalations in the Middle East, Dubai International Airport (DXB) has suspended all operations after being struck by debris from intercepted Iranian drones.

The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday, March 1, 2026, caused minor structural damage to a concourse and left four airport staff injured. In response, the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) took the unprecedented step of closing national airspace to all commercial traffic, citing “exceptional precautionary measures” for passenger safety.

A Giant Displaced

For Emirates, the world’s largest operator of the Airbus A380, the timing could not have been worse. As a carrier built on the “hub-and-spoke” model, nearly its entire operation relies on the ability to transit through Dubai. With the home base compromised, the airline’s flagship superjumbos are now “orphaned” at outstations from New York to Manila.

Industry analysts suggest that having nearly 100 of these $450 million aircraft immobilized is costing the airline millions in lost revenue and logistical penalties every hour.

Where is the Fleet?

While 37 aircraft remain at the now-silent DXB, the rest of the active fleet is currently parked at international gateways. Passengers at these airports have reported seeing the iconic double-decker jets lined up on taxiways and remote stands, waiting for a “green light” from UAE defense authorities.

Travel Chaos and Next Steps
