An Air India flight from Kochi overshot the runway while landing at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.

July 21, 2025 — Mumbai: Air India flight AI2744, an Airbus A320 (registration VT-TYA), veered slightly off the main runway at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport during landing in heavy rain on Monday morning.

The flight, arriving from Kochi, experienced a runway excursion after touchdown on runway 09/27 at 9:27 AM.

Preliminary reports suggest poor weather conditions contributed to the incident. The aircraft briefly left the paved surface, with sources indicating that three tyres burst and the engine may have ingested debris. Despite the excursion, the aircraft maintained enough speed to maneuver back onto the runway and was not stuck.

Air India confirmed the event, stating:

“Flight AI 2744, operating from Kochi to Mumbai on 21 July 2025, experienced heavy rain during landing, resulting in a runway excursion. The aircraft taxied safely to the gate, and all passengers and crew members have since disembarked. The aircraft has been grounded for checks. The safety of passengers and crew remains our top priority.”

All passengers and crew were unharmed and disembarked safely. The aircraft has been taken out of service for detailed inspection and repairs.

Mumbai Airport authorities also issued a statement:

“An incoming aircraft from Kochi experienced a runway excursion at CSMIA at 09:27 hours on 21 July 2025. Emergency response teams were immediately activated. Minor damage was reported to runway 09/27. To maintain uninterrupted operations, the secondary runway 14/32 has been activated.”

While repair work is underway on the primary runway, operations have been temporarily shifted to the secondary runway. Flight delays are possible, but the airport remains fully operational.
