The United Airlines flight UA507 departed San Francisco, USA at 17:03 for a scheduled flight of 11 hours and 45 minutes to Rome, Italy.
Eight hours into the flight, the crew declared a general emergency (squawk 7700) to require a priority landing in Reykjavík.
The flight, operated by a 26yo Boeing 777-200ER (registration N76010), was scheduled to land in Rome at 13:20 (local time).
