A flight from Tokyo Haneda to Newark was forced to divert to Anchorage following incident.

A Boeing 777-200ER was flying over Pacific today when the crew decided to divert due to a mechanical issue.

The flight UA130 departed Tokyo HND Airport for a 13-hour flight to Newark Friday at 17:40 JST and flew at FL350 when the pilots changed course to North.

According to an ACARS message, the aircraft (registration N791UA) was suffering a fuel leak. The message was also mentioning there were 290 passengers and crew on board.

The flight diverted to Anchorage 8 hours after departure. The airline is planing to resume the flight at 00:45 AKDT with a spare aircraft.

The same flight suffered an incident on 13 April 2025, when it diverted to San Francisco.

How ACARS Works

ACARS uses VHF, HF, or satellite communication links to transmit messages. It’s like a text messaging system for airplanes, but for technical and operational data. Messages are sent automatically or manually by the flight crew or ground control.
