A United Airlines Boeing 777-200 nearly impacted the ocean on December 18.

A Boeing 777-200 taking off from Maui’s airport nearly impacted the ocean on December 18, in a serious incident revealed by the The Air Current according to data from Flight Radar 24.

The United Airlines Boeing Boeing 777-222 aircraft (reg. N212UA) was performing flight #UA1722 from from Maui (OGG) to San Francisco (SFO).

The 22-year-old aircraft did an unexplained nosedive of around 8,000ft per minute from an altitude 2,200 feet during the initial climb.

The pilots were able to recover, they came within 775 feet of the ocean.

Sources believe the pilots pulled 2.7G’s to recover the situation.

Maui was experiencing heavy rain at the time of the departure
