Winds as high as 80mph have been recorded across northern parts of the UK.

A Ryanair plane made what was described as a “tippy toes” landing at Manchester Airport as strong winds brought on by the first named storm of the year lashed the region.

Thousands of homes in the UK were without power as Storm Otto swept across parts of Scotland and northern England.

The storm was named by the MET office DMI in Denmark, where authorities warned about hurricane strength gusts of winds.
