Lufthansa has announced that it will cut its shortest route between Munich and Nuremberg, replacing the service with a bus.

The domestic route between Munich International (MUC) and Nuremberg Airport (NUE) was the shortest route among the Lufthansa group’s routes. The 168-kilometre route took around 40 minutes of flight time.

As most of the passengers bound to Munich were connecting passengers and considering the economic aspect, the German flag carrier decided to connect its passengers via a bus.

The flight was operated four times a day, and only 3% of the passengers ended up their journey in Munich back in 2018. This route out of Munich will now be replaced with Lufthansa Express Bus, which will take two hours and 15 minutes to connect the two cities. Travelling by train or a car takes around 1:50 hours or 1:10 hours respectively, as the distance between them is 138 km in a straight line.

However, Lufthansa’s 190km route between Frankfurt and Nuremberg will remain in operation. Subsidiaries SWISS and Austrian will also continue their seasonal services to Nuremberg.

Lufthansa, along with its subsidiary Eurowings, operates 90% of all domestic flights operated within Germany.
