In an Australian first, Virgin Australia has relaxed it’s rules around baggage allowances for infants. The changes mean that 23kg of checked-in baggage will be included free for children 23 months and under, plus two infant items like baby capsules, prams or cots. An extra 7kg of carry on for essential baby products will also be allowed. The changes will apply to both domestic and international flights.

Infants not using a seat on domestic flights fly free, while international flights cost 10% the cost of the adult fare.

The announcement comes a day after the airline announced another Australian first, a program for nervous fliers. As part of the program nervous fliers will receive an email a week before their flight with some wellbeing tips and behind the scenes look at some technical aspects of Virgin Australia’s operations. There will also be a text message on the day of the flight, inflight wellness and meditations on inflight entertainment and special attention from cabin crew.

Stuart Aggs, Virgin Australia’s Acting Chief Operations Officer told travelweekly.com.au, “Our research tells us more than 11 per cent of our guests experience high levels of nervousness about travelling, and that they want information and support to help them through their next flight.”

The program is available for all Virgin Australia operated flights when booked more than 7 days in advance. Access to the program can be made by selecting, specific assistance/request nervous flier, when booking through the website, or through Manage Booking if a booking has already been made, or by calling the guest contact centre.
