The pilot of United Airlines flight UA77 raised the alarm at around 8.30am on Sunday.
The Boeing 757-200 was flying from Newark, New Jersey, to Belfast.
The aircraft landed safely just before 9am and Belfast International Airport confirmed the cause of the emergency was a sick passenger.
The passenger was able to walk off the plane and was treated at the airport.
