Two Indian air force fighter aircraft collided mid-air in central India killing one pilot.

The planes crashed in an open field near no civilians. Villagers heard a blast-like sound and found parts of an aircraft in the nearby field.

Both aircraft have been identified having taken off from Gwalior air base about 30 miles east from where they crashed.

The accident involved a Russian made Sukhoi-30 and a French-made Mirage-2000, an official with knowledge of the matter added, asking not to be identified, because the details were not public.

Preliminary analysis of crash reports, they said, point to the possibility of a mid-air collision given the two aircraft taking off from the same air base, crashing around the same time and their debris being found in the same area.
