On the 8th of March, 2024 an American Airlines Boeing 777 collided with a Frontier Airlines Airbus A320 family aircraft at Miami International Airport.

The American Airlines Boeing 777-200 with registration N736AT was scheduled to depart as flight AA929 bound for Sao Paulo. However, while taxiing away from the gate in Miami, the B777 collided with the tail of a parked Frontier Airlines Airbus A320/321.

Footage circulating online shows the American B777 making contact with the tail section of the parked Frontier aircraft during pushback.

The left horizontal stabilizer of the B777 and the tailfin of the Airbus sustained major damage. Both aircraft were taken out of service.

No one was injured in the incident and passengers on the American Airlines flight disembarked normally, while the aircraft was grounded for inspection by maintenance crews.

While the exact Frontier aircraft model (A320 or A321) involved hasn’t been confirmed yet, the cause of the incident remains under investigation.

In a statement, American Airlines acknowledged the incident stating, “During pushback from the gate in Miami (MIA), the wing tip of American Airlines flight 929 with service from MIA to São Paulo (GRU) made contact with the tail of a parked aircraft. Customers deplaned normally and the aircraft was taken out of service to be inspected by our maintenance team. We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience this caused.”

Frontier Airlines also issued a statement confirming the incident and that their passengers were being re-accommodated.
