Southern Airways Express Cessna performs emergency landing on the highway

A Southern Airways Express Cessna C208 Grand Caravan was forced to land on the multi-lane Loudoun County Parkway with seven onboard.

The Cessna with registration N1983X was involved in the incident. The emergency landing occurred amid winter weather conditions that had already caused disruptions in the D.C. area.

Dulles International Airport reported the incident, affirming that the Southern Airways Express flight took off from the airport before performing the emergency landing on the parkway.

Jesse Labell, a witness to this incident, described the startling moment when the small plane descended just 20 feet above him, ultimately landing on the parkway near Arcola Mills Drive.

As the aircraft touched down, it skidded and crashed into a guardrail, causing minor damage. Quick responses from Loudoun County Fire & Rescue and nearby crews ensured that all passengers and the 27-year-old Florida pilot emerged unharmed.

Loudoun County Parkway’s southbound lanes were temporarily closed as authorities, including the FAA and NTSB, began their investigations.

Stan Little, CEO of Southern Airways, expressed relief that all passengers were safe and commended the pilots for their adherence to safety protocols. The statement emphasized their commitment to a thorough investigation, working closely with authorities to ensure the safety and security of both passengers and the airline fleet.

Despite the unexpected landing causing traffic disruption, the roadway was reopened by 6 p.m., thanks to the prompt response of emergency responders and investigative agencies.
