A cargo aircraft landed safely after experiencing an engine malfunction shortly after departure from Miami International Airport

Atlas Air flight 5Y95 from Miami (MIA) to San Juan (SJU) suffered engine issues and visible flames after takeoff from Miami International Airport.

The Boeing 747-8 (reg. N859GT) returned back for a safe landing on Runway 9 of Miami.

A Miami airport spokesperson confirmed to Newsweek that the Atlas Air flight landed safely at Miami airport just after 11 p.m.

The aircraft was a Boeing 747-8, according to Flightaware data. “The crew followed all standard procedures and safely returned to MIA,” the company said in a statement.

Atlas Air 95 took off from the Miami airport at 10:32 p.m. ET and had been heading to Luis Munoz Marin International Airport in Puerto Rico when it was diverted.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded and no injuries were reported, Miami International Airport said in a separate statement to Reuters.
